The project includes the financing, design, construction and the operation of an 800 m long submerged tunnel (2 x 2 lanes) over a 50 year period. The tunnel crosses the river Warnow in Rostock, the main port in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Land on the Baltic Sea in north-east Germany. The essential phase of the site works consisted in dredging the river and removing one million m³ of mud, sand and marl. In parallel, the six tunnel segments, each 120 m long, 22.5 m wide and weighing 22,000 t, were constructed in a dock next to the river and then floated into position. Bouygues Construction also carried out the access works on four kilometres of motorway: bridges, overpasses, roads and toll stations. The Rostock tunnel is the first private road infrastructure concession project in Germany. In 2006, the concession contract was extended by a further 20 years.
